El Dia de los Ninos

May 1, 2008 / by NMoua

On Saturday April 27,2008 my family and I attended the Nakland Children’s Carnival. The carnival was organized by the Nu Alpha Kappa fraternity from Chico State. The actual name of the event is called El Día de los Niños (Children's Day). “it is a celebration for children!” said one of members I interviewed. He was giving away free burritos for the kids.

Día De Los Niños celebrates and honors the children of the community for their efforts in and out of school by giving them a day to receive toys, candy, money, and most of al recognition of their future worth.” There were slides and bouncy houses, as well as games with prizes, music and performances. They also had Tigger and Barney!! The event was free to the public and held at the Sports Stadium at CSU, Chico from 1:00pm - 4:00pm. Two new bicycles were given away in a raffle.

A little background on how NAK came to be:

“In the fall of 1994 a group of dedicated young men joined together to form "Hermanos De La Comunidad," an interest group that was seeking fraternity status. Their main goal was to bring Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity to the CSU, Chico campus. Their choice in NAK was made after nearly a years time of careful consideration. Their opportunity to pledge came on February 4, 1995 at the Beta Chapter in San Diego during NAKfest '95. After several months of a dedicated but strenuous pledgeship, the Theta Chapter of Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity was established at California State University, Chico on September 9, 1995” http://www.nakchico.org/main.html

Here they actually caught me in a picture!! http://www.flickr.com/photos/nakchico/2448176266/in/set-72157604481068057/ There were a lot of people who attended this event on a very hot Saturday. It was a day full of fun for the kids. What I liked the best was the live performances. One little girl danced in front of everyone!! The celebration is done in Mexico on the last day of April. NAK wanted to bring it to our town, Chico, to provide a  “safe environment for families and students of the university to build bridges and provide positive role models”. Everyone was so nice and made this experience a great one. We walked away with tons of free prizes, tummies full from the free food, balloons and for me, a sunburn.
