The Kalachakra Mandala Closing Ceremony

March 15, 2008 / by NMoua

Many people gathered on March 8th to watch the closing ceremony of the Kalachakra Mandala. Tibetan Monk Losang Samten had spent many months creating this Mandala. By dropping pieces of sand he created the Kalachakra Mandala, The Wheel of Time, inside the Chico State University BMU. Samten created the work as a blessing.

The ceremony consisted of chants and prayers. Members of the audience chanted the Kalachakra Mantra along with Losang.

We were also lead through the Om Mani Padme Hum (the jewel is the lotus or praise be to the jewel in the lotus), and the Bodhichitta prayer.

After that, designs in the sand that represented the 722 deities were gathered and put into a ritual vase by Losang.

He then allowed children and adults to gather the sand, placing some in small envelopes for later disbursement to the audience, and some to be poured into the creek.

We were then lead to the Chico Creek and Amphitheater. Flowers were first thrown into the water. We then watched as Losang poured his creation into the creek. But why does he pour out all his hard work? “It is to show that nothing lasts forever. And it is to bless the creatures as well,” Losang.

Different kinds of instruments were played by the creek side following the pouring.

I enjoyed meeting Losang and receiving a little of his wisdom. This video is of a different Kalachakra Mandala dismantling, but I thought it would be nice to include a video demonstration. Enjoy J
